Effects of TV Entertainment Program Exposure on Adolescents’ Willingness to Take Cosmetic Surgery: The Role of Benevolent Sexism

|
The goal of the present study was to understand the effects of high school students’ amount of TV entertainment program exposure on the willingness to take cosmetic surgery and the role of the belief of benevolent sexism as a potential mediator between the two variables. To serve the research purpose, an online survey was conducted with 500 high school students. The findings show that in the case of male students the belief of benevolent sexism played a mediator between the amount of TV entertainment program exposure and the willingness to have cosmetic surgery. However, the exposure to TV entertainment programs did not change high school female students’ willingness to undergo the surgery. In the case of female students, only the belief of benevolent sexism appeared as a significant predictor of their willingness to take cosmetic surgery.
